   Application Development

Major players in the world of Capital Markets build almost every application themselves. Any application that is purchased from a third party is either heavily customised or the source code is purchased and development continues internally. BNP Paribas is no exception. Applications are built and rebuilt according to the rhythm of the changing market requirements. Innovation in the business of Capital Markets requires innovation in the applications that support the business. When an application goes live it can be seen as the first iteration of that application, subsequent iterations will follow and the team size may even increase if the changing business requirements demand it.

BNPPISPL Capital Markets team builds new applications for the Capital Markets business and continues the evolution of these applications. The scope of work includes front, middle, back office and service applications.

Each application development team aims to build expertise in the technology of the application and a good understanding of the functional requirements that the application support. Depth of knowledge is important asset for each team member. Development methodologies vary depending on the need of the application and the business that is supporting it. There are experts in Agile methodologies( XP & Scrum), Test Driven Development and more classical approaches. Whichever methodology is used, a collaborative approach to development will be taken between the different teams involved in building the applications.

The right candidates may come from financial services companies or elsewhere. Training will be given in the areas of technology, business functionality or methodology to the candidates that meet our entry criteria.

   Application Testing

Financial applications often face such complexities as multi-tier architecture, multiple vendors and high development and implementation costs. Detecting and resolving bottlenecks in such complex environments is no easy task. Application Testing group provides comprehensive value-added 'independent' testing services for resolving issues in BNP Paribas complex enviornment.

Application Testing group offers a host of opportunities in Functional & Regression testing using both manual & automated test practices. One can specialise in a testing career (junior test engineer, Test Lead, Test Manager etc).

   Application Support

Application support requires multi-disciplined skilled staff that have functional understanding of the business area and a technical understanding of the application works. Long term opportunities for application support staff reflect their multi-disciplinary roles and can be in more than one direction.

Application support is a good opportunity to learn a particular business area, therefore one career opportunity is to capitalise on this business knowledge and to become a business analyst. The technical skills required for application support can lead to a career in application development. The organisational skills needed for application support can lead to promotion as a team leader and then on further through the management structure.

   Quantitative Analysis

The quantitave research team at BNPPISPL are responsible for financial instrument research, modelling and development. Typical assignments involve testing existing models against historical observations from the financial markets, parameter estimation for model improvement, analysis and interpretation of model results or research of new instruments.
